DON DOUGAN

MFA: GEORGIA STATE UNIVERSITY

       BFA: ATLANTA COLLEGE OF ART
artist - sculptor
Originally from the Pacific Northwest, Don lives and works just outside of Atlanta Georgia.  His studio is conveniently located less than an hour's drive from several marble quarries, and over the years his 'rock pile' has grown to include blocks of dozens of different types of stone for carving.

He has also spent a good part of the past decade working in Cortona.  Cortona is a Tuscan hill town in Italy.  There, on the side of the hill overlooking the Val de Chiana, he has carved stone, cast bronze, and taught sculpture to American students.  Cortona has been the Italian home of the University of Georgia's Studies Abroad program for over thirty years.   Don has grown to love the town and its citizens, and his residencies there serve to re-form the nature of his work during each visit.  For a change of pace he also teaches stone carving to art students in Imatra Finland, using their locally quarried soapstone.

Most of Don' work is sculptural, and stone is the primary material which he prefers for constructing his metaphoric landscapes and figures.  However, his crisply defined forms are worked and assembled with a variety of other materials, too.  Diverse textures and colors are used to create sensual contrasts - exploring the relationships between form, material, and space through the context of the working process.

His sculpture uses the relationships and qualities of the material to express spiritual and archetypal characteristics.  These characteristics are distilled from his perceptions of human nature, and imaginatively set within an awareness of personal growth.
His works suggest vignettes showing the intricate relationships binding the characters, the settings, and the events inextricably intertwined through the drama of human life.
